Congratulations to Kathleen Wynne

January 27, 2013 - Toronto
- On behalf of Freedom Party of Ontario, I congratulate Kathleen Wynne on her election as Leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

Ms Wynne assumes the office of Premier of Ontario at a difficult time in Ontario's history:

  • The government is running unsustainable double-digit deficits. Our Finance Minister has declared Ontario's debt to be a "ticking time bomb".

  • The centre of goods and services production and consumption is moving to more profitable, higher-population locales. Ontario is following an eastward path to third-world status as industry and capital travel a westward path to more hospitable legal environments in Asia.

  • Lacking a clear policy directive from the government, police are crafting their own policing policies, pursuant to which they are restricting the personal liberty of peaceful individuals in the face of intimidating protestors, refusing to enforce private property rights, and openly declaring their contempt for orders of the court. There is a risk that the administration of justice will fall into disrepute, and that violations of life, liberty, and property will become more common as a result.

  • Ontario's health insurance monopoly consumes an increasing percentage of Ontario tax revenues. As a result, a growing elderly population faces a future of extra billing, life-threatening and painful delays, and the denial of many health care services.

At the Liberal leadership convention yesterday, Ms Wynne declared that her team has "sizzle". Given the severity of the situation in Ontario, we need a premier who also brings the steak. This is no time to follow the example of Ontario's official opposition Progressive Conservatives. Ontario will not be served by the issuance of numerous promise-nothing white papers that float a few headline-grabbing trial balloons. This is a time for clear programs and promises, not for non-committal open musings, bait-and-switch tactics, or macho flash posing.

Ms Wynne's Liberal party has put forth its representative: the individual who best reflects Liberal Party values, views, and plans for Ontario. Before the next general election, Ontario deserves a chance to know exactly what those values, views and plans are - in no uncertain terms - so that it can decide whether or not to ratify Ms Wynne's assumption of the Office of Premier.

Sincerely,

Paul McKeever
