EVES ASSOCIATES 'GOOD' MARTIN LIBERALS WITH HIS PCs

PC/Liberal Parties Interchangeable; Only Fp Retains Common Sense

September 21, 2003 - Oshawa, Ontario

His PCs 17 points behind the provincial Liberals, Ernie Eves last night attempted to associate his Ontario PCs with the future of the federal Liberal party, and Dalton McGuinty's Liberals with its past. He said:

"[Paul Martin] understands that if you don't reduce taxes and continue to reduce debt and get your fiscal house in order, in today's economy, you're going to be left behind. Unfortunately, Dalton McGuinty and Jean Chretien don't understand that they are still living in the past, where, they think, if you raise taxes, you're going to get more money..."

"This proves the point I, and many politicos, have been making since Eves assumed the leadership of the Ontario PCs" says Freedom Party of Ontario leader, Paul McKeever. "It is now more difficult than ever to deny that a choice between the Ontario Liberals and Ontario PCs is a choice between Dalton Eves and Ernie McGuinty. We now officially have Eves trying to prove that his provincial party is the ideological counterpart of the federal Liberal Party under Martin. His remarks not only confirm the official death of the federal PC party and the death of the common sense agenda within the Ontario PCs, but also demonstrate the interchangeable nature of the PC and Liberal platforms at the provincial level in Ontario." McKeever adds: "Eves' association of the provincial PCs with the Martin Liberals underscores the importance of Freedom Party as the remaining voice of common sense in Ontario".

Defending Ontario from the excesses of the federal Liberals also becomes an issue at this point, says McKeever. "We now have two provincial parties in Ontario fighting to be the counterpart to the federal Liberals. How Eves can now claim to be a stiff defender of Ontario against the federal Liberal government is beyond me. Freedom Party, and Freedom Party alone, remains unwilling to sell-out Ontario to the whims of the federal Liberals."
