My pleasant surprise at seeing your editor defend freer U.S.-Canada trade ("Exploring free trade," Editorial, Aug. 6) was quickly soured by his argument based merely on the pragmatic necessity of "restoring the country's confidence" and preserving "at least a semblance of prosperity." Free trade is a matter of individual right, and until our governments are willing to view it in that light any expectation that "an open discussion of the issue" could even focus on the cause of our economic and social dilemmas is highly unrealistic. It is no mere coincidence that the most free nations are invariably the most prosperous.
